Qualifications: 

 

Required Qualifications

• Valid Massachusetts Chapter 74 Vocational Technical Teacher license in Metal Fabrication and Joining Technologies, or eligibility and willingness to obtain the license through DESE.
• High school diploma or equivalent, with required recent employment experience directly related to metal fabrication, welding, and/or joining technologies, as determined by DESE.
• Demonstrated technical knowledge of metal fabrication, welding, shop safety, tools, equipment, print reading, measurement, fabrication processes, and industry-standard practices.
• Ability to provide safe, inclusive, competency-based instruction to students in grades 9–12.
• Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with students, families, colleagues, administrators, and industry partners.
• Commitment to student success, equity, access, safety, and continuous professional growth.

Preferred Qualifications

• OSHA 10 General Industry or OSHA-related safety credential.
• AWS Certified Welder, AWS SENSE Entry-Level Welder, Hot Works Safety Certification, or related industry credential.
• Experience teaching, training, mentoring, or supervising apprentices, employees, or students in a shop or industry setting.
• Experience with SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW, pipe welding, plasma cutting, oxy-fuel cutting, sheet metal fabrication, CNC or automated equipment, and weld inspection.
• Experience supporting students with diverse learning needs, English learners, and students with IEPs or 504 plans.
• Experience working with advisory committees, employers, apprenticeship programs, unions, postsecondary institutions, or workforce partners.
• Familiarity with competency-based instruction, project-based learning, career readiness, and employability skill development.

• Integrate employability skills, professionalism, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and digital literacy into daily instruction.
• Maintain tools, equipment, materials, inventory, safety records, and shop organization.
• Collaborate with colleagues and school staff to support student learning, safety, and program improvement.
• Remain current in industry practices, safety standards, instructional strategies, and DESE Chapter 74 expectations.

General Duties: 

 

Guides and evaluates the learning experience of the students in her/his classes and accepts responsibility for activities of students within her/his purview within the school building or on the school grounds. Through instruction aligned to the Massachusetts Metal Fabrication and Joining Technologies framework, students will develop technical skills, safety practices, employability skills, and access to industry-recognized credentials that support career readiness and lifelong professional growth.

 

Specific Duties: 

• Teach metal fabrication, welding, and joining skills to students in grades 9–12 through competency-based technical instruction.
• Align curriculum, instruction, assessments, and student performance tasks to the Massachusetts Metal Fabrication and Joining Technologies framework.
• Develop and implement lesson plans that include technical instruction, shop demonstrations, project-based learning, embedded academics, employability skills, and student reflection.
• Teach and reinforce safe shop practices, including OSHA-aligned safety procedures, proper use of personal protective equipment, tool and equipment safety, ventilation, machine guarding, hot work procedures, lockout/tagout, and safe material handling.
• Demonstrate and supervise the safe and proper use of hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, welding, fabrication, cutting, and forming equipment, as well as related shop technology.
• Provide instruction in areas such as metallurgy, fabrication materials and practices, sheet metal, print reading, measurement, welding symbols, SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW, pipe welding, automated equipment, preventative maintenance, and weld inspection.
• Prepare students for applicable, in-demand credentials, including OSHA 10 General Industry, AWS-related credentials, Hot Work Safety Certification, and other industry-recognized credentials aligned with the program.
• Maintain accurate records of student progress, including grades, competency tracking, safety documentation, student performance, and required program documentation.
• Communicate with students, families, counselors, administrators, special education staff, and other school personnel regarding student progress, support needs, and program expectations.
• Participate in IEP, 504, student support, and team meetings when appropriate or required.
• Support an inclusive learning environment that provides access, encouragement, and appropriate support for students with diverse learning needs, backgrounds, and career goals.
• Collaborate with the CTE Director, school and district administration, colleagues, advisory committee members, industry partners, postsecondary partners, and employers to strengthen program quality and career pathway opportunities.
• Support cooperative education readiness, career exploration, employability skill development, and connections to industry where applicable.
• Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and productive shop environment that reflects school, district, OSHA, and industry expectations.
• Participate in professional development, department meetings, advisory meetings, curriculum work, safety training, and other school or district responsibilities as assigned.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Principal, CTE Director, Superintendent, or designee.
